Professor Yogesh Chawla, Head of the Department

Dr. Yogesh Chawla is a Professor & Head of the Department of Hepatology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh.

Dr. Chawla is the author of more than 240 publications, including original papers, reviews, book chapters and a monograph. His main research work has been in the areas of cirrhotic and noncirrhotic portal hypertension, Budd-Chiari syndrome, viral hepatitis and biliary diseases.

He is an active member of several International and National medical organizations, including Fellow of American College of Gastroenterology (FACG), European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), Indian Association for study of the liver (INASL), Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG), Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (SGEI), Indian Medical Association (IMA), etc.

Dr. Chawla is the recipient of many International and National awards and honours including prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy Medical Council of India Silver Jubilee Research Award in 1999, M.N. Sen Oration Award by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in 1997, Amrut Mody Unichem Prize from ICMR in 1999, Olympus Mitra Endoscopy Award" by Indian Society of Gastroenterology in 1999, Parke Davis Oration Award by Indian Society of Gastroenterology in 2002, etc.

Dr. Radha Krishan Dhiman, Additional Professor

Dr. Radha Krishan Dhiman is presently serving as Additional Professor in the Department of Hepatology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. Dr. Dhiman graduated (MBBS) from the King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, India and received his doctorate in gastroenterology (DM) from the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Medical sciences, Lucknow, India. He is a Fellow of American College of Gastroenterology (FACG) and National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS).

Dr. Dhiman is the author of more than 150 publications, including original papers, reviews, book chapters and a monograph. His main research work has been in the areas of hepatic encephalopathy, portal hypertension, viral hepatitis and biliary diseases. He is an Associate Editor of the Indian Journal of Gastroenterology. He is Editor-in-Chief of ‘Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology’ which will be launched in early 2011.

Dr. Dhiman is the recipient of International Awards and honours including ‘Young Clinician Award’ from World Congress of Gastroenterology at Los Angles in 1994, from Japanese Society of Gastroenterology at Yokohama in 1996, and from Asian Pacific Congress of Gastroenterology at Hong Kong in 2000. Dr Dhiman received several National Awards including prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy Award from Honourable President of India in 2006, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) awards [Dr. D.V. Datta Memorial Oration Award in 1996, Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize from ICMR in 1998 and Amrut Modi Unichem Award in 2004], Hoechst Om Prakash Memorial Award from Indian Society of Gastroenterology in 1997, Olympus Mitra Endoscopy Award" by Indian Society of Gastroenterology in 2003, Apollo Award of Merit” in 2006 by Apollo Hospitals, etc.

Dr Virendra Singh, Additional Professor

Dr Virendra Singh is working as Additional Professor in the Department of Hepatology, PGIMER, Chandigarh.

He is an active member of several International and National medical organizations, including American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Indian Society of Gastroenterology, Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India, Indian Association for Study of liver, European Association for Study of Liver, Asian Pacific Association for Study of Liver.

Dr. Singh is the author of more than 60 publications, including original papers and reviews. His main research work has been in the areas of circulatory dysfunction in cirrhotic ascites , abdominal tuberculosis and malignant biliary obstruction.

Dr. Singh has received Himalaya Junior INASL Fellowship in 1994, Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Visiting Fellowship in 1995, Olympus-Mitra Endoscopy Award in 2000, Sisco-Pentax Oration in 2001, Travel Award from American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver, Bursary from European Association for the Study of Liver for attending 41st Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Liver (EASL – 2006) held in Vienna, Austria in 2006, International Travel Grant from Indian Society of Gastroenterology for attending APDW 2006 at Cebu, Phillipines, First Prize in Oral Plenary Session at National Conference of Indian Association of Study of Liver Disease, held at CMC, Vellore in March 2007etc.

Dr Ajay Duseja, Assistant Professor

Dr Ajay Duseja, Assistant Professor, Department of Hepatology, PGIMER, Chandigarh has been working in the field of Hepatology for the last 15 years.

He is a fellow of American College of Gastroenterology (FACG), member of American association for the study of liver diseases (AASLD) and an active member of several Indian societies, including, Indian Society of Gastroenterology, Indian Association for the Study of liver, Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India, Indian Medical Association, etc.

He has published over 60 papers in various international and national Journals. His primary area of interest is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), portal hypertension, viral hepatitis and biliary disorders.

He is actively involved in the organization of various National level conferences by the Department. He was treasurer of Society of GI Endoscopy of India (SGEI) (2003-2005) and was Honorary Secretary of Indian Medical Association, Chandigarh State Branch. (2004-2005).

He is the recipient of various awards and fellowships including 28th Asia- Pacific International Fellowship by Asian Molecular Biology Organization in May 2005, ISG- APDW Fellowship in Nov 2006, ISG-Alkem Om Prakash Memorial Award for the year 2006, ISG-Systopic oral - Best Paper Award 2005, coauthor in the ISG- Best poster award 2006, Prize from Indian Journal of Gastroenterology for the third best original article in the year 2004 etc. He was a visiting scholar for training in liver transplantation for 3 months, at the UNC center for Liver Diseases and Transplantation, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA.
